Construction union UCATT will be stepping up their campaign to prevent the casualisation of security guards on construction sites.
UCATT fears that unregulated companies on sites in safety critical locations could in the worst-case scenario increase the likelihood of a terrorist attack.
In recent years there has been a successful attempt to improve the image, regulation and training of security guards on construction sites. The vast majority of major security companies are now registered with the Security Industry Association, however membership is not mandatory. The SIA was formed in order to ensure that the quality of security improved and "criminal elements" were removed from the industry.
UCATT are currently targeting the Dhesi Group which is not a SIA member and is responsible for security at both the Pinnacle in Bishopgate and the Shard of Glass at London Bridge. When completed the two buildings will be the tallest in the capital.
The Pinnacle Tower is being built by Brookfield for Arab Investments Ltd. The 60-foot tower, is a multi million pound project.
Last month UCATT officials and activists leafleted the general public outside the Pinnacle about their concerns that the unregistered security company could increase the possibility of a terrorist attack. UCATT are asking the public to write to the contractors, the client, the Lord Mayor of London and the City of London police about their concerns.
