Construction News Image
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has heralded the capital's top organisations for saving nearly 120,000 tonnes of carbon, slashing tens of thousands off their energy bills.

At the first ever Green500 and Better Buildings Partnership awards, the Mayor presented a range of performance accolades to London large organisations covering a range of sectors such as sports, arts, education, local government, transport and commercial landlords. The event was hosted at Chelsea Football Club who is a member of the Green500 and the first football club to join the scheme.

Both programmes are funded by the London Development Agency to help deliver the Mayor's target to cut London's emissions by 60% by 2025, create green collar jobs and stimulate a low carbon economy. Together, over the last year, their 200 members have saved a massive 117,000 tonnes of carbon, equivalent to taking 100 double decker buses off London's streets which would also fill 8.3 billion footballs. Recent sign-ups include Arsenal Football Club and Saatchi and Saatchi.

Mr Johnson, said: "I salute London's top organisations for truly grasping the nettle to become greener. Their sterling work to cut carbon and become energy efficient puts London on the front foot to emerge from the economic downturn stronger and stimulate new jobs."
