First Minister Officially Opens New Welsh Medium School In Swansea

The First Minister has officially opened Swansea's first purpose-built Welsh medium school, Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Llwynderw in West Cross.

The school first opened its doors to pupils last September and features include a new library, a fully-equipped IT suite and an original artwork in glass.

Sustainability and the environment were key to the new building's development and this is why a number of measures to save energy, natural resources and water were incorporated into the project.

Rhodri Morgan said: "I am delighted to be opening this new school, which will offer best quality state of the art facilities and 21st Century standards for pupils and teachers. This will become a model for what primary schools should be providing for all our youngsters whether in Welsh medium or English medium primary education. We can expect great things from this school."

The new Ysgol Gynradd Llwynderw site was built to meet increasing demand for Welsh medium education in the west of Swansea.

Contractors Wilmott Dixon worked in partnership with officers from Swansea Council's education department and Simon Trew of Stride Treglown architects on the design and construction of the new school.
