Businesses in Leicester are being invited to reduce their carbon footprint in the city.

The Leicester Energy Agency, which is part of Leicester City Council, is encouraging businesses to take part in the new 'Reducing Carbon Emissions in Small-to-medium sized enterprises (SMEs)' project.

The project, which is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, will help them to assess their carbon footprint and to consider measures to respond to climate change.

A launch event will be held at Abbey Pumping Station on Friday 12 June at noon to talk about businesses reducing their carbon footprint.

The event will explain how SMEs in the greater Leicester area can receive advice and guidance free of charge on increasing their energy efficiency, incorporating renewable energy into their buildings and addressing the general issues surrounding climate change in the economic community.

By attending this event businesses could be one of the first in line to benefit from a grant to help install intelligent metering technology for the monitoring of utilities (gas, electric and water). This allows businesses to see exactly how much energy is being used at any one time and can identify wastage.

Previous companies who have intelligent metering have not only seen a 10 to 15% drop in energy consumption but have also used this information to negotiate their fuel tariffs for future years.
