Liverpool-based Mayfield Construction has been awarded the top industry benchmark for sustainability, as well as an International Safety Award, for its work on the £6.5m second phase of Liverpool Science Park.

The 'ic2' building - a 4-storey office development with internal car parking and external landscaping - achieved a Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) 'Excellent' rating for its high standards. Mayfield was the main contractor on the project, for Neptune Developments.

A team of independent assessors investigated the environmental implications of the building based on set criteria and awarded it with a score - and while 25% is needed for a 'Pass', it surpassed this with an impressive score of 71.82%. Areas in which it achieved particularly high scores were management of construction site impact, reduction of CO2 emissions, water consumption, responsible sourcing of materials, and enhancing the site ecology.

Mayfield also scooped an International Safety Award from the British Safety Council, in recognition of its commitment to improving corporate health and safety. The British Safety Council congratulated Mayfield on what it described as an "outstanding achievement" and presented the firm with its award at a winners’ banquet at Grosvenor House in London.
