Repairs To The A47/A1 Bridge At Peterborough

The Highways Agency will be working to replace the bridge deck waterproofing and surfacing on the A47 bridge at the Wansford Junction on the A1, just north of Peterborough, starting on 7 May for two weeks.

The bridge carries the A47 over the A1 and works will take place between the two adjacent roundabouts.

To enable the works to be carried out safely, it will be necessary to close each carriageway of the bridge in turn.

The A47 westbound will be closed from 8pm on Thursday 7 May until 6am on Monday 11 May, and also overnight from 8pm on Tuesday 12 May until 6am Wednesday 13 May

The A47 eastbound will be closed from 8pm on Thursday 14 May until 6am on Monday 18 May, and also overnight from 8pm on Tuesday 19 May until 6am Wednesday 20 May.

The diversion route for westbound A47 traffic goes from the A1 southbound roundabout onto the A1 southbound to the A1139 roundabout at A1(M) Junction 17 and back along the A1 northbound via the A47/A1 northbound roundabout onto the A47.

Eastbound traffic will be diverted off the A47 at the A1 northbound roundabout onto the A1 northbound to the B1081 junction at Stamford and back along the A1 southbound via the A47/A1 southbound roundabout onto the A47.

The works are being carefully planned to minimise disruption as much as possible to drivers.

A Highways Agency's project manager, John Gardner, said: "This work needs to be carried out to maintain the integrity of the structure for years to come.

"Unfortunately, due to the layout of the junction and the nature of the waterproofing process, we cannot keep lanes open during the roadworks and also ensure the safety of the public and our contractors. We considered the use of traffic signals but that would have required major work to the central reservation and also resulted in significant delays.

"I apologise for any disruption that this essential work will cause but I can assure you that we shall be doing our utmost to minimise delays and complete the work as quickly as possible."
