Corby's First Rail Link In A Generation Unveiled

Transport links at one of the UK's fastest growing towns have been boosted thanks to a £9 million railway station which was officially opened today by Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon.

Initial services connecting Corby with London and other regional stations began running earlier this year - more than 40 years after rail services to the town were cancelled under the Beeching cuts - but from today the town will benefit from a new hourly service to London.

Geoff Hoon said: "Corby is one of the fastest growing towns in the UK and if this economic success is to continue good transport links are vital; I am delighted to be able to officially open this new railway station, which will provide direct services to London in just over an hour.

"The Government is committed to encouraging more passengers onto the rail network and that is why we are investing over £10 billion in enhancing capacity between now and 2014 with overall Government support totalling £15 billion."

The new station, which has been funded by Network Rail, the East Midlands Development Agency and English Partnerships, has been built to a modern design and provides full access for disabled passengers. It also has bicycle parking facilities and an adjacent car park for commuters.
