Buildings Top Of The Pile In Mendip

Construction in Mendip has been celebrated at an awards evening in Glastonbury.

Private homes, farm buildings and an orthodontist were among the winners of Mendip District Council's, Built in Quality Awards 2009.

The awards, sponsored by Bradford’s Building Supplies and InterPublic Systems Ltd, were presented last Friday at Glastonbury Town Hall.

Built in Quality Awards have now become an annual event to recognise and reward projects built to the highest standards of design, workmanship and project management, during the past year.

Architects, builders, developers and private individuals received prizes in eleven categories for: administration, single new house, multiple housing site, conversions, private extensions/ alterations, commercial new build, business extension/alteration and accessible building.

The winners were chosen by a panel of experts in the field of construction and planning, including the head of the district council’s building control department, Tracy Aarons.

Tracy said: "I'd like to congratulate all those who have won prizes. These awards give builders, developers and individuals the chance to be proud of their successful designs and approach to managing their projects.

"The standard and quality of this year's winners has been very high, and they can all be congratulated on their success. This is the only awards ceremony of its type in Mendip showcasing the best the construction industry has to offer in the local area."

Mendip District Council's Building Control Service is responsible for ensuring building work carried out across the district meets national standards of safety, known as the Building Regulations, and that minimum levels of energy conservation and disabled access are also incorporated.

The service checks and advises on proposed plans and specifications and also inspects work during construction to ensure compliance, issuing certificates to owners on completion where work has been satisfactory.

The sponsors of this year's awards are Bradfords Building Supplies Ltd, which has branches across the South West and InterPublic Urban Systems Ltd, who work in partnership with Mendip District Council to maintain public conveniences across the district.
