The latest of four new elderly care facilities to be built in Birmingham, Sheldon Heath Special Care Centre, is already playing a key role in caring for elderly residents from the local community.
Built by Wates Construction and designed by architects Glancy Nicholls Associates, the centre is a fusion of contemporary design, using traditional timber and stonework materials, resulting in a visually stunning and highly functional building. For their continuing commitment to providing specialist elderly care facilities Wates has been nominated for a Built in Quality (BiQ) Award, in the Community category.
Wates Construction Project Manager, Simon Neath, said: "This is a hugely successful project and we are very proud of what we have achieved with the whole Project Team. The building is set into its own landscaped gardens, providing a safe and secure environment that will deliver a welcome change for some of the more vulnerable residents.
"The 64 bedrooms, gymnasium, communal lounge, multi-media room, physiotherapy suite, hairdressers, and on-site health care facilities provide a high standard of assisted living on a long and short-term basis to our aging community."
Staff at the centre recently welcomed their first patients into their private en-suite rooms, which will provide a high level of dignity and comfort.
The project was nominated for a BiQ Award by Birmingham City Council Building Control Surveyor, Steven Powis, who added: "This superb new facility has been finished to a very high standard with very welcoming interior spaces, ensuring the occupants will be extremely well catered for. Wates Construction has continued their commitment to using specialist sustainable building techniques with this project, an aspect that will benefit both the environment and the users for many years to come."
The BIQ awards, now in their eleventh year, are run by Birmingham City Council's Building Consultancy to promote and reward construction excellence.
