The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) has welcomed the wide-ranging response of the Communities and Local Government Committee (CLG) on housing and the credit crunch, in particular its call for more emphasis on providing social rented housing both to meet a backlog of demand, and new demand from people who are unable to access home ownership and private rented housing in the current economic crisis.

The CIH also welcomed the importance the CLG committee places on measures to revive the mortgage market, support for existing homeowners to remain in their homes and protection of tenants in private rented housing whose landlords risk repossession.

The CLG committee's insistence on maintaining current house building quality standards and the importance of the strategic role of local authorities in the provision of housing to meet local need and of advice on housing options are also issues on which CIH has campaigned.
