Chesterfield's Market Hall is to undergo a detailed study that will look at its future potential uses and likely options and costs for refurbishment and development.

Chesterfield Borough Council has successfully secured funding to carry out the Market Hall study. The work will be done by Taylor Young design consultants who provide advice on all aspects of building and spatial development.

The Grade II listed Market Hall, located in the town centre, was originally built in 1857 'for the shelter and safeguard of market people'. The building houses approximately 50 retailers together with a number of offices, an assembly hall, and meeting rooms.

The feasibility study will give recommendations to support the long term future of the Market Hall as a sustainable town centre iconic building, identifying threats and opportunities, strengths and weaknesses.

We recognise the importance that the building has to the future image and prosperity of the town centre and to this end will be consulting directly with market hall traders' representatives in order to gain first hand understanding from users."
