The British Property Federation (BPF) is backing calls by the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) for the introduction of minimum standards for agents.

The BPF would like to see the enforcement of minimum standards on all letting agents to better prevent rogue operators operating in the maket place and to protect both landlords and consumers.

Ian Fletcher, Residential Director at BPF, said: "A better regulated sector will drive up consumer protection and also be good for landlords. Landlords place a great deal of trust in agents to handle significant sums in rent coming in and held on their account. As the interface between landlords and their customers it is vital that high standards are met throughout."

Ian Potter, Operations Manager of ARLA, said: "The state of the market demands that recognised minimum standards be introduced for all lettings agents. Historically, a light regulatory touch has undermined confidence in private renting and with an increase in rental properties there is no better time for radical reform."
