Energy Park Proposal Accepted By City Council Cabinet

Peterborough City Council's Cabinet has endorsed a recommendation not to object to plans for a major energy park provided important conditions are fulfilled.

At a Cabinet meeting, a decision tabled by Council Leader Councillor John Peach asked for clarification on important planning conditions and for a review of a traffic study and measures to limit the impact of vehicles using the proposed energy park.

The city council would seek payment equal to £2,000 per vehicle using the energy park as a contribution to highway works, says the decision.

Peterborough Renewable Energy wants to build the energy park on a 13.7 hectare site off Storeys Bar Road on the east of the city. The proposed facility would be capable of processing or recycling up to 650,000 tonnes of commercial, agricultural and other waste, biomass and bio-crops and would generate 66 megawatts of electricity annually.

Under the Electricity Act 1989, the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) must decide whether or not the development goes ahead but the city council has been asked for its comments on planning issues. The development will also require an environmental permit from the Environment Agency before it can proceed.
