Pupils at Newbury's Winchcombe School could be in line for a brand new set of buildings, following a feasibility study which gets under way this month.

The existing structure, which dates from the 1950s, has done sterling service but new purpose-built, modern facilities could see children and staff at the primary school benefit from a greatly improved teaching environment. Also, the aim would be to build the new school within the existing grounds, with no disruption to current pupils.

The proposal comes as part of West Berkshire Council's ongoing commitment to upgrade all its school buildings where possible.

Executive Councillor, Barbara Alexander, said: "This is a really exciting opportunity for The Winchcombe School. Over the last year, there have been many improvements made, which resulted in a very positive report from Ofsted inspectors in December. Enhancing the school's physical surroundings would perfectly complement this excellent progress."

The new building would include better community facilities, a 52 place nursery and provision for children with special educational needs.

Paul Dick, Chairman of the School's Interim Executive Board said: "I congratulate West Berkshire Council for taking forward the development of the site, to provide education and community facilities fit for the 21st Century."
