UCATT To Defend Members Sacked For Trade Union Membership

Construction News Image
Construction union UCATT will represent six Kosovan workers at an employment tribunal, after their employer sacked the men for trade union activity.

The men were formerly employed by Crowleys on an Islington council contract. The contract they worked on transferred to FM Conway Ltd in 2007. The workers alleged that following the contract transfer there were attempts to pressurise them into working on a 'self-employed basis' and when they refused to do so and involved UCATT they were dismissed on trumped up charges. The workers believe they were dismissed due to their membership of UCATT.

UCATT are supporting the workers' claims on the grounds of trade union discrimination and unfair dismissal.

Alan Ritchie, General Secretary of construction union UCATT, said: "UCATT will always defend its members from discrimination. Far too many construction companies believe that they can bully and exploit vulnerable workers and pay them the bare minimum. This kind of attitude is entirely unacceptable in the 21st century."
