Sheffield City Council has indicated it was working to ensure that a 'state-of-the-art' housing project would be able to achieve its aims, even though the developer has ceased to operate.
The 'Green Homes' scheme at Norfolk Park in Sheffield offers 47 homes that are very cheap to run and will reduce Sheffield's carbon footprint. The developer of the scheme, the Environment Trust, has run into difficulties during the current economic climate.
Councillor Bob McCann, the Council's Cabinet member for Housing and Sustainable Safer Communities commented: "Council Tax payers have not contributed to this scheme, but we are still committed to try and ensure the best outcome here. It is a great shame that the Environment Trust has not been able to withstand current market conditions. We are working hard to try and make sure the problems can be resolved satisfactorily."
The Council ensured that land was available for the scheme, as part of the regeneration of the Norfolk Park area of the city. It also helped to secure a government grant to support the scheme through the Government's Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder Scheme.
