National Grid has invited local residents to comment on detailed plans for two new substations and associated overhead lines at Weston Marsh, near Spalding.

The scheme forms part of the Grimsby to Walpole project, a 140km electricity connection linking northeast Lincolnshire and north Norfolk under The Great Grid Upgrade, the biggest modernisation of the UK’s electricity grid since the 1960s.

With electricity demand in the UK – including Lincolnshire – expected to double by 2050, the current network cannot accommodate the projected growth. The proposed substations are intended to connect cleaner, homegrown energy from more affordable sources to the grid, supporting jobs and investment in the region.

This targeted consultation covers Route Section 5: Weston Marsh Substations A and B. The proposed locations are unchanged from earlier consultations. Communities and stakeholders are being asked to provide feedback on detailed designs, landscape and visual matters, and construction access and delivery plans ahead of planning submissions.

National Grid is proposing two new 400 kV substations at Weston Marsh, linked by a short underground cable and connected to the wider Grimsby to Walpole reinforcement through new and modified overhead lines.

Weston Marsh Substation A is proposed east of Marsh Road near Surfleet Seas End and north of Weston (South Holland district). To minimise new infrastructure and disruption, it would sit close to existing overhead lines and be delivered in two phases:

• Phase 1: Proposed to connect to the Outer Dowsing Offshore Wind Farm, providing clean electricity from a more affordable source for 1.6 million homes by 2030.

• Phase 2: Completing the substation as part of the Grimsby to Walpole project by 2033.

Weston Marsh Substation B is proposed north of Stone Gate and east of Marsh Road, near the Moulton Seas End junction (South Holland district). If approved, it would connect to the transmission network via new and diverted overhead lines and bolster homegrown energy security.

Both sites have been chosen to avoid local constraints, including a pumping station and a gas pipeline, and would incorporate new planting and landscaping to reduce visual impact.

The targeted consultation runs from 12 noon on Tuesday 18 November to 11:59pm on Friday 19 December 2025.
