Costain Secures Five-Year EDF Nuclear Project Controls Deal

Costain has secured a new five-year framework from EDF to continue delivering project controls services across the energy company’s eight nuclear power stations in the UK.

The Project Controls Resources Framework extension is worth £75m to Costain over five years and takes the partnership through to 2030. Costain has supported EDF under this framework since 2017 — a relationship previously extended in 2021 and 2023, covering safe operations, plant life extension, and preparations for defuelling and decommissioning.

Under the renewed arrangement, Costain's award-winning project controls team will keep strengthening EDF's core capabilities in programme management, quality and safety, with the aim of improving project performance, securing cost efficiencies and supporting strategic resource planning. Costain will also assist EDF's transition from generation to the defuelling of Advanced Gas Reactors.

The framework currently spans more than 400 projects and is delivered by a team of over 170 integrated project controls professionals, including 50 trainees and juniors, helping to grow skills in the complex, highly regulated nuclear sector.

Bob Anstey, sector director for defence and nuclear energy at Costain, said: "The extension of our relationship with EDF is testament to our established position in the UK’s civil nuclear energy market and our delivery of predictable, best-in-class nuclear decommissioning and project controls services.

"We’ve been a trusted partner to EDF since 2017, during which time we have consistently delivered and increased the breadth of our services, and we’re very happy to be continuing our partnership for another five years. We’ll continue to deliver projects across a range of complex working environments to the highest safety standards, whilst supporting the development of skills in the sector to help futureproof the workforce and support local prosperity."
