BSI auditors have recommended that British Gas receives certification to the international environmental standard ISO 14001 after a rigorous assessment in September.
The BSI report said: "This was a very strong performance by the company with commitment and awareness demonstrated by staff spoken to at all locations and at all areas within the business."
The certification covers more than 26,000 people and 30 locations and is awarded to British Gas Services, British Gas Business, British Gas Residential and British Gas New Energy, as well as the support functions of Group Property, Fleet and Information Services.
Group Head of Environment James Rushen said: "This is a major milestone for British Gas and the culmination of a significant amount of teamwork across the brands and support functions in achieving what is certainly one of the largest certifications of its kind in the UK.
"This endorsement from BSI demonstrates to our customers that we really are committed to reducing our environmental impact and are keen to lead the way to a more sustainable future."
