As the American housing crisis deepens, a key speaker at the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) North East housing conference on Friday 14 November will explain how innovative housing policy can help create a future for vulnerable households.

The region's largest housing event, to be held in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, will hear lessons on re-building communities from the assistant commissioner of the City of Chicago housing department.

Bill Povalla, whose city's housing policy is attempting to respond creatively to the current economic and housing crisis, will share his experiences on tackling issues such as drug misuse, mental illness and unemployment as well as the challenge of providing appropriate affordable housing for an ageing population.

Gavin Brown, Chair of CIH North East regional committee and conference chair, said: "This year's conference has a very strong speaker line-up of leaders from the housing field and we expect to welcome over 100 senior professionals to debate the future of housing in the region and how we can improve services to tenants."
