Stansted Expansion Plans Given Green Light

Construction News Image
Plans for an extension of Stansted Airport, which would increase passenger numbers by 10 million, have been given the go-ahead by the Government.

Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon made the announcement today, which would see an increase in flights from 241,000 to 264,000 - and raise the number of passengers from 25 million to 35 million.

Mr Hoon made the announcement in a statement to Parliament.

Uttlesford District Council originally denied planning permission for the project in 2006, following complaints of noise pollutions and environmental concerns.

However, owner of the London airport, BAA, announced in a public inquiry that measures to control, manage and minimise the local environmental impacts would be introduced.

Objectors to the plans believe the expansion would cause considerable harm to the environment, while members of the Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) campaign group have carried out a campaign opposing the plans.

However, some unions said the proposals could bring much needed jobs to the area.

Aviation Minister Jim Fitzpatrick said the decision to expand the airport came about due to an "urgent" need for additional runway capacity in the South East.

He added: "We recognise that there have been strong views about Stansted's expansion... and all views were given the chance to be heard at the public inquiry."
