Schools Minister Jim Knight has officially opened one of Manchester's most eco-friendly schools.
Rolls Crescent Primary School in Hulme boasts a rainwater harvest system, solar energy, cedar tiles, windows that open and close automatically depending upon the temperature and even a wind turbine.
The £4.9m purpose built 2,424 sq m development has enabled the school to move from a one form to a one and a half form entry, with the potential for further growth in the future.
The new and improved school, which is sited on the playing fields of the former school, has been carefully designed to meet the educational needs of the 21st century and also with the input of pupils who attended a variety of workshops to share their ideas.
The design includes light airy classrooms, natural lighting and state of the art ICT facilities. The grounds have been extensively developed and include a multi use games area, outdoor classrooms and a multi skills pitch.
Headteacher, Wendy Zaidi said: "Staff, pupils, parents and carers are delighted with our new building. We have demonstrated that inner city schools can be outstanding and our new building is enabling us to raise our standards and attainment even further."
