Council tenants across Carmarthenshire will save £4million a year on their energy bills thanks to efficiency measures carried out by the local authority.

Work has been completed five years ahead of schedule leading to savings for the average household of £420 a year.

Measures include loft insulation saving £110, £90 from cavity wall insulation, £110 through high efficiency boilers and £110 through double glazing and draught proofing.

The savings are a result of the improvements carried out to the county council’s housing stock to meet the ambitious Carmarthenshire Homes Standard.

Project Manager Adrian Young said: "We are pleased that as a result of both the windows and doors programme and cavity wall insulation programme we have once again managed to raise our energy efficiency levels to the Welsh Housing Quality Standards five years ahead of schedule.

"This is particularly pleasing because it results in lower heating bills for our tenants at a time when energy costs are increasing, thus reducing fuel poverty."

This year, further work will be carried out targeting the elderly - a group at high risk from fuel poverty - particularly with rising fuel prices.
