Work To Improve Recycling Centre To Begin

Major improvements designed to make the Chelson Meadow Recycling Centre in Plymouth safer and easier to use are due to start in September.

The centre is visited by around 450,000 people every year who use the site to get rid of a wide range of recyclable and reusable waste such as cans (steel and aluminium), car batteries, fridges and freezers, scrap metal, textiles and plastics.

The new design gives better access, servicing and car parking areas to make a trip to the centre quicker, improve the flow of traffic through the site and make it safer.

Councillor Michael Leaves, Cabinet Member for Street Scene and Environmental Regulation said: "We have made great progress in improving our recycling rates and now recycle over 30 per cent of our household waste, but we need to keep pushing this.

"A better site will encourage people to recover more recyclable and reusable materials. Facilities for waste electronic equipment and hazardous waste will also be improved."

A new road entrance, ramp, storage areas, and recycling facilities will be constructed as part of the package which will cost more than £2 million.

The work is expected to start in the first week of September and continue until late Spring.
