Hillingdon Council Helps Cut Fuel Bills For Residents

Construction News Image
As Centrica annouce profits of £5m per day, Hillingdon Council is working with partners to help reduce fuel bills for residents, especially for vulnerable and older people.

Earlier this month, Hillingdon Council received the EDF Energy award for excellent partnership and achievements with the London Warm Zone (LWZ) heating and insulation scheme for private sector residents.

The LWZ scheme helps to combat climate change and reduce fuel bills, as well as help people, especially the elderly, to receive unclaimed state benefits.

It gives grants for boiler repairs, new central heating systems and the installation of loft and cavity wall insulation and is available to homeowners and private tenants. Concentrating on assistance for vulnerable and elderly homeowners, it aims to improve the energy efficiency of homes, lower heating costs and reduce the effects of climate change.

Cllr Ray Puddifoot, Leader of the Council and Older People's Champion, said: "Age Concern estimates that one in three pensioners will be in fuel poverty this winter. Hillingdon Council are committed to helping elderly residents in whatever way we can which is why we have frozen council tax for the over 65s for three years.

"Since 2007 over 1000 homes in Hillingdon have received either cavity wall or loft insulation and 150 homes have had new heating systems."
