The South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) has welcomed the news that Dover district has been successful in its bid for Growth Point status.

The major announcement by the Department for Communities and Local Government recognises the contribution that Dover can potentially make to the economic development prospects of the local area, whilst focusing on regeneration measures that will benefit existing communities and reverse deprivation.

SEEDA Chairman James Brathwaite, who met with the Regeneration team from Dover District Council, on 21 July, said: "This is great news for Dover and will be a major opportunity to create new homes and local jobs for local people with new, sustainable transport systems.

"SEEDA is delighted that the good groundwork done with local partners has achieved Government backing and financial support for this new Growth Point."

Cllr Paul Watkins, Leader of Dover District Council, also commented: "Joint working and partnership engagement across public sector agencies, local authorities, MPs, business and community interests has brought about a range of programmes that on their own are exciting but combined provide a transformational regeneration programme that is unprecedented in Dover's history.

"We welcome the support from SEEDA and other agencies in helping us to deliver this unique world-class agenda."
