£90m Contract To Build Energy Centres Awarded

The contract to build, finance, and operate Energy Centres for the Olympic Park and Stratford City has been awarded.

Elyo, a subsidiary of SUEZ Energy Services, has won the contract and will invest more than £90m of private investment in the project.

Two Energy Centres - one in the west of the Park and the other within the Stratford City development - will be built, together with around 16km of energy networks.

The new infrastructure will provide an efficient power, heating and cooling system across the site for the Games and for the new buildings and communities that will develop after 2012.

The Energy Centres will use innovative technology including biomass boilers and a Combined Cooling, Heat and Power (CCHP) Plant. These support London 2012's commitment to use renewable energy sources across the Park. The boilers use sustainable fuels such as woodchip and natural gas and will help to reduce C02 emissions by at least 20 per cent.

Planning permission has been secured for the Park Energy Centre and construction work will begin later in the summer.
