Delays caused by gas works to replace a 100-year-old series of pipes will be eased after Surrey County Council agreed with Southern Gas to stop the works for Christmas.

Halting the scheme, in West Street, Farnham, will allow traders to carry on with the busy pre and post Christmas period - when the suspension starts from November until February next year.

The council has been in talks with the gas company over the works, which will be carried out in 100 metre sections in West Street for 16 weeks.

The work is important as it will replace the current gas main which is around a century old and cannot cope with modern demands or safety standards.

The gas board will work seven days a week to install the replacement pipes, but the nature of the work will mean the council has no choice but to put in a partial road closure and 24 hour temporary traffic signals.
