Victorian terraced homes in the Derbyshire village of Ironville will be transformed by a major housing modernisation programme launched by Amber Valley Housing and Lovell this month.

Work is beginning on a £1.75 million scheme to extend and upgrade 32 properties dating from the 1840s.

As part of Amber Valley Housing's major property improvement plan Lovell will demolish existing extensions at each home and build new extensions. The layouts of homes will be improved so that all properties benefit from upstairs bathrooms while brand-new kitchens will also be installed at each property. Homes will benefit from new roofs, new central heating, electrical and plumbing systems and damp-proofing courses. External improvements will include new fencing.

Construction teams will spend an average of 12 weeks improving each property. Residents in each household will move to alternative accommodation nearby while the improvements are carried out.

"This modernisation programme will dramatically transform the Ironville homes and make a real difference to people's lives," said Lovell Regional Director Steve Hale. "We'll continue to work closely with residents, the surrounding community and Amber Valley Housing as we carry out the building work to turn these 19th century properties into warm, comfortable and modern homes."
