Cherwell District Council's Executive has restated its opposition to the construction of a proposed eco-town near Bicester and its intention to look at possible grounds for a legal challenge to the proposal.

The Local Government Association (LGA) is considering a legal challenge and the Council will now work with the Association to support this approach.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Barry Wood, said: "The proposed eco-town is the biggest threat to social cohesion in the District. Cherwell District Council is fully opposed to this development. It is contrary to our planning policy and it is only appropriate that the Council should invest resources to challenge it. We do not intend to stand by and be ridden over rough shod."

The Council will respond formally to the Government by the end of June.
