Deputy first Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones has revealed proposed details of a major multi-million pound investment programme to improve the rail network of Cardiff and the Valleys corridor.
The £30 million project, being carried out parallel to Network Rail's £200 million Cardiff Area Resignalling project, will see significant improvements to Cardiff Central station, Queen Street station and the Cogan Junction area, including new signalling systems. The works will bring significant benefits to travellers across the Valleys network.
Mr Jones, who is also Minister for Economy & Transport, said: "Wales has earned a reputation as a leading light in investing and redeveloping our railways. I am delighted that Welsh Assembly Government's investment of a minimum £7 million enables this scheme to deliver the optimum range of benefits.
"We are seeing increasing demand for on our trains and our programme of support in Cardiff and the surrounding areas shows we are developing a strong, efficient transport system fit for a 21st century Wales.
"It will improve capacity in our capital's major train stations and have benefits for the Valleys by increasing the number of seats on trains and improving services. As a government we are committed to strengthening our rail network to boost the economy."
UK Rail Minister Tom Harris said: "Increasing capacity to meet future demand for rail travel is our top priority. That is why the Department for Transport is investing over £20m in schemes that will deliver for passengers in south Wales. The plans outlined today mean extra platforms for travellers using Cardiff Queen Street and Cardiff Central Stations, more peak capacity, more frequent peak services and allow more freight to be carried on the rail network."
The funding will allow the proposals to be further developed and a feasibility study to be undertaken.
