Civil engineering contractor Edmund Nuttall Limited has been awarded a £5 million contract by Network Rail.
The project involves the removal of existing rail, sleepers and ballast from Hampstead Heath tunnel which is approximately 1,100m long and will be replaced with concrete track slab system.
The project will begin at the end of July and will run for 32 weeks. This scheme to modify the tunnels will help to accommodate large freight trains.
Nuttall first used this innovative track slab system at the Macclesfield and Prestbury Tunnels.
