Surrey County Council has put the final touches to its new multi-million pound library in Walton-on-Thames.

Walton Library which opened its doors yesterday is part of The Heart complex in the city centre.

The £2 million library is on the third floor, above shops such as Debenhams, Crew Clothing Company and Planet.

Helyn Clack, Surrey County Council's Executive Member for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: "I am delighted that the new Walton Library is open for business. The facilities are brilliant and are set in a lively and exciting setting.

"This proves our commitment to offering an even better customer service, value for money and a library reflecting modern needs. It shows our Libraries Service is responding to change so it can stay effective and relevant. The new library will offer a more central site and great access because of its fantastic position among the town's shops."

The opening of Walton Library is part of an improvement programme being rolled out by Surrey County Council to offer better service and to meet the modern needs of library users. It follows the opening of Addlestone Library in Runnymede Borough Council's new Civic Centre this month and the launch of new library hours – which saw the 24 main libraries in the county extending opening by 198 hours per week.
