Construction Company Fined £18,000 For Unsafe Excavation

A construction company has been fined £18,000 and ordered to pay costs of £12,000 after a worker fell into an unsafe excavation and was seriously injured.

Mr David Farrow received a broken pelvis and internal injuries in the incident, which happened on 2 May 2006.

HSE Inspector Debbie John said: "Construction has a significant number of risks to health and safety which need to managed properly. There was a systematic failure by Winnington Construction Ltd of Newcastle under Lyme to manage the risk on this site, which resulted in Mr Farrow falling into the excavation and receiving quite serious injuries."

Winnington Construction, based in Newcastle-under-Lyme, pleaded guilty to breaching S2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act at Wrexham Magistrates' Court in February, which referred the case to Mold Crown Court.
