Tipper Truck Boss Fined Over Illegal Fuel

A Welsh haulage boss is counting the cost of using illicit fuel after HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) stopped his tipper truck in Swansea.

The Pontardawe-based operator's truck, which had a concealed tank housing red diesel, is due to be crushed.

Andrew Burgoyne, Road Fuel Control Officer, HMRC commented: "This detection showed that users of illicit fuel will often go to extreme lengths to avoid paying the duty that most honest, law-biding hauliers have to pay. He is now facing a heavy financial loss - his vehicle is on its way to the crusher.

"Red diesel is a rebated fuel that can only be used in off-road vehicles. This case shows that using this fuel illegally doesn't pay - and we will seek it out."

HMRC officers stopped the Foden tipper truck in Swansea last month and on checking the vehicle employed a mechanic to carry out a detailed inspection of the fuel system. At the front end of the vehicle, inside the tipper body, was the concealed tank containing red diesel. The fuel capacity of the tank was approximately 250 litres. The vehicle was seized and removed to central storage.

During interview the owner admitted fitting the false tank last year and was aware that he should not run road vehicles on red diesel. In line with current policy, the vehicle will not be returned and he will be required to pay £500 in civil penalties, as well as facing a substantial bill for back duty.
