Three former workers for Amey Mouchel, maintenance, improvement and management services company to the Highways Agency (HA), have been jailed for three years after subjecting a Muslim workmate to racial harassment.

Phillip Skett, Sean Melaney and Lee McDermott, who worked at a Walsall roadworks depot, tried to force-feed Amjid Mahmood bacon, which is forbidden in his religion, the Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

They also tied the man to railings and hosed him down with cold water, set the victim's trousers on fire and placed an item which resembled a bomb in his locker.

Judge John Warner said: "This behaviour was an appalling example of what can happen and its consequences. This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated in a civilised society, in the workplace or elsewhere."
