Major demolition and construction work began this week to demolish the former Barnsley Council offices off County Way and construct a new 170-space car park on the site.
The additional town centre parking will be linked to the existing Lower Courthouse car park. It will replace parking spaces lost as a result of the Digital Media Centre and Voluntary Action Barnsley developments.
Security lighting and solar-powered ticket machines will be installed for the new surface car park. Drainage works will ensure surface water run-off is controlled.
The wooden footbridge that currently links the building to County Way will be carefully taken down and delivered to the council’s Countryside Team, which intends to use it on one of their footpath projects.
The works, costing £207,000, are expected to take eight weeks to complete and are being undertaken by Fox (Owmby) Ltd.
