Sheffield Council and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have signed an agreement to work in partnership on health and safety matters.

The Statement of Intent is aimed at helping the organisations meet national targets on improvements in health and safety at work. Both organisations are enforcing authorities for health and safety at work.

Sheffield Council is responsible for premises, including shops, offices and warehouses, and the HSE covers premises such as factories and construction sites.

The partnership agreement is formalisation of current arrangements where HSE and local authorities on a national, regional and local level are focussing on key priority themes, such as a reduction in incidents of slips and trips, falls from height, and enforcement of legislation concerning the duty to manage asbestos in premises.

Mr Ian Ashmore, the Council's Head of Environmental Regulation said: "The local partnership with HSE will make the best use of joint resources to tackle health and safety activities that give rise to the highest incidents of accidents and ill-health."
