Plans for a multi million pound pipeline that will keep the taps running in Gloucestershire during an emergency have been unveiled.
The proposed new system, part of a £25 million package, would safeguard supplies to Gloucester and Cheltenham if ever the Mythe Treatment Works failed again.
The plans have been drawn up by Severn Trent Water in the wake of last year's floods when thousands of homes and businesses were without water for almost three weeks.
The details were outlined to Gloucestershire County Council's Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee, which carried out an independent inquiry into how local authorities and other public bodies responded to last year's emergency.
Scrutiny Committee Chairman Cllr Rob Garnham said: "This is very encouraging. It is just what we wanted to hear - that there will be an alternative water supply coming into the county that will prevent a disaster that happened last year from occurring again."
