As work draws to a close on the £6.24 million London Road 'gateway' improvement scheme in Peterborough, there will be a number of changes to pedestrian crossings, with new additional facilities also provided.
New crossings will be located at the following locations: East Station Road; London Road at the junction with Oundle Road; Oundle Road; Fletton Avenue; London Road at the junction with Glebe Road and Fletton Avenue
In addition, there has been some issues surrounding testing and installation of new traffic signal systems. As highlighted by engineers last week, the completion of the London Road 'gateway' improvement scheme depended on the success of rigorous testing and commissioning of sophisticated software that will coordinate traffic light controls along the route. This process began on Friday and has resulted in the need for further modifications.
It is anticipated that the opening of the new road will now take place when the new crossings become operational next week.
The completed scheme will provide a fifth lane in the centre of Town Rail Bridge, permitting traffic to queue at traffic light controlled right turns into Oundle Road and into East Station Road. There will be dedicated left-turn filter lanes from Oundle Road on to the bridge and from London Road into Oundle Road. Improvements have also been made to London Road from the bridge to the Fletton Avenue/Glebe Road junction.
The improved layout includes the creation of a new pedestrian and cycle path leading from Pleasure Fair Meadow car park, on to the outside of the bridge's western parapet, allowing the road to be widened in the space formerly occupied by the footpath.
