£6.24m London Road 'Gateway' To be Completed Next Week

Work on the £6.24 million London Road 'gateway' improvement scheme in Peterborough is expected to be completed by the middle of next week (Thursday 10 April) bringing substantial benefits for all people needing access to the city centre.

Final completion depends on the success of rigorous testing and commissioning of sophisticated software that will coordinate traffic light controls along the route. This process will begin tomorrow and any modifications could extend the completion date by up to two weeks.

Severe weather over the Easter weekend prevented main contractor Osborne from carrying out scheduled re-surfacing work, resulting in several days' delay, which could not be recovered despite intensive night-time and weekend working.

While the main improvement work is close to completion, an additional project to realign the junction between London Road and Cripple Sidings Lane will continue for another four months. However, this is not expected to cause any disruption to the flow of London Road traffic.

The completed project will provide a fifth lane in the centre of Town Rail Bridge, permitting traffic to queue at traffic light controlled right turns into Oundle Road and into East Station Road. There will be dedicated left-turn filter lanes from Oundle Road on to the bridge and from London Road into Oundle Road. Improvements have also been made to London Road from the bridge to the Fletton Avenue/Glebe Road junction.
