Fire fighters are investigating the cause of a fire on a construction site in Manchester.

The blaze happened at a new five-story apartment building in Burnage, which was under construction.

At around 10.30pm on Easter Sunday, more than forty fire fighters were called to put out the 40ft flames.

The fire caused power cuts to over 3,000 homes and it took eight fire engines and two aerial platforms to tackle the flames.

No one is believed to have been injured.

Station Commander Wayne Guffogg said: "It was brought under control around midnight.

"It was a very big fire and there were around 500 people who came from across the area to watch.

"At its height, flames were shooting 40ft into the air and could been seen from miles around."

Power was restored to the 3,000 homes by midnight.
