A North Wales coroner is claiming asbestos in Flintshire's schools was the likely cause of the death of art teacher Renee Blodwen Eden.

Dewi Pritchard Jones wrote a warning letter to Flintshire County Council about the danger of asbestos in schools.

The Association of Teachers and Lecturers are demanding that asbestos must be cleared from schools by 2010.

During an inquest he said retired Ms Eden, 69, had died from mesothelioma, which was probably caused by exposure to asbestos.

A spokesman for Flintshire County Council said: "As a former employer we empathise with the grief of the family of Renee Eden and wish to extend our condolences to the family.

"The council cannot make any further statement until we understand directly from the coroner the details behind the outcome of the inquest. The council will make a statement in due course."
