Welsh Education Minister Jane Hutt has today welcomed the opening of the new Special School, Ysgol Maes y Coed, which has been built with £3.9m of investment from the Welsh Assembly Government.

The school, formally Britton Ferry Special School, has been constructed using funding from the School Building Improvement Grant and includes a regional resource base for children and young people with multi-sensory impairments from across South West Wales.

Jane Hutt said: "I want to see equality of opportunity and access for all in our education system. It is of great importance that young people with special educational needs have access to modern facilities so they can reach their full potential.

"The Assembly Government is currently seeking the powers to change primary legislation in the field of additional learning needs. With these powers Wales will be able to develop our own unique approach to the delivery of an inclusive education system.

"Our substantial investment of nearly £4m in this school in Neath Port Talbot highlights our commitment in the One Wales document to making sure that all schools are fit for education in the 21st Century."
