Work on a new £1.5m scheme to strengthen the coastal defences of an Anglesey village is now underway.
Parts of Trearddur Bay have constantly suffered during stormy conditions with sea water breaching defences and flooding roads and occasionally properties.
The Trearddur Bay Coastal Scheme will involve strengthening the promenade and reconstructing the sea wall, with rock armour, along Ravenspoint Road.
As part of the scheme, measures will also be put into place to effectively channel most future floodwater back into the sea.
The works will reduce the chance of failure of the coastal defence and flooding from the sea, but cannot eliminate it.
The scheme includes several elements: Replacing the wall along Ravenspoint Road and introducing a rock armour to help absorb waves and reduce overtopping; Strengthening the existing sea wall between Ravenspoint Road and Towyn y Capel; Dune rehabilitation works and street works to route flood water back to the sea.
Head of Highways, Dewi Williams, explained: "The Authority has committed £500,000 of its own capital funding to the scheme and also successfully bid for Welsh Assembly Government grant aid for the remainder of the costs after presenting a feasibility report prepared by Faber Maunsell.
"Local residents have also played an important role in the project with input during two public consultation exhibitions and feedback from a survey providing further historical information about flooding in the area."
Further consultation on the project has been undertaken with DEFRA, Environment Agency, Countryside Council for Wales and neighbouring coastal authorities.
