Telford & Wrekin Council has announced its concern that the Government is commissioning a study to find ways to raise the number of new homes to be built in the borough over the next 20 years.

A recent letter sent to the West Midlands Regional Assembly from Baroness Andrews has asked the Government Office to find a further substantial number of houses in the West Midlands above the level recently proposed by the Regional Assembly. Their proposals recommend a figure of 26,500 for the Borough over the next 20 years.

Council Leader Andrew Eade said: "We already find ourselves facing a substantial increase in house building under last year's proposals which will see the generation of an additional 26,500 homes in Telford and Wrekin.

"We feel that we have already accepted our share of new build for the region and now have the balance about right, if we are to protect the environment and minimise the impact on our local communities and services.

"We will defend our current position robustly and continue with our policy of building on brownfield sites in order to minimise the pressure on greenfield areas."
