Residents in Amber Valley wanting to carry out work on their home are being advised to make sure they apply for planning permission before beginning their project.

Amber Valley Borough Council process over 1,600 planning applications each year, with the majority of residents and developers seeking permission for their projects before work gets underway.

However, planners at the Borough Council regularly encounter applications where work has already been carried out without the proper authorisation.

Cllr Stuart Bradford, Leader of Amber Valley Borough Council said: "Anyone intending to carry out a building project should first check with the Council whether they will need to apply for planning permission and then ensure that they have the relevant permissions in place before embarking on their scheme.

"Unauthorised development has been a problem for us for a number of years and we now need to take a hard line against those choosing to flout planning laws. Anyone ignoring the regulations should be fully aware that they lay themselves open to enforcement action and may be required to demolish their work."
