New Scheme Introduced To Prevent Flooding In Rothes

A scheme to reduce the risk of flooding to homes and businesses in Rothes has been given the go ahead.

Minister for Environment Michael Russell said: "I am pleased to confirm that Moray Council can go ahead with a sound flood prevention scheme for Rothes.

"The three small burns (Burn of Rothes, Back Burn and the Black Burn) converge in the village before entering the Spey. As a result over 400 homes and businesses - around 80 percent of Rothes - are at high risk of flooding from these burns.

"Rothes was subject to severe floods in 1997 and 2002 which caused substantial damage to businesses and properties in this area.

"The estimated cost to the area was £1.65 and 2 million respectively. This new flood prevention scheme will help prevent this happening in the future.

"The Scottish Government is committed to protecting vulnerable communities from the threat of flooding by supporting local authority's efforts to reduce flood risk."

The £21 million Rothes scheme comprises of channel rehabilitation, addressing sediment movement and habitat restoration.

The flood capacity will be increased through a series of channel and structure modifications and through the provision of formal flood defences through Rothes.
