Alnwick District Council has been short-listed for three awards that celebrate best practice among local authorities, in the North East.

There are 10 categories in the Shine Awards 2008, which have been organised by the Association of North East Councils and sponsored by the Improvement Partnership for North East Local Government.

The council has been short-listed for the Value for Money and the Partnership Working awards and in the Unsung Hero section, in which it nominated Syd Carr, who works in its housing services section. He has been a council employee for 30 years.

No other district council in the North East has been short-listed in as many as three categories.

In the Value for Money Award the council had to demonstrate how a particular project or initiative had been executed successfully against budget and objectives. The scheme included in the nomination comprised the new community park, adjacent affordable housing scheme and out-of-town council works depot, at Lionheart Enterprise Park.

In the Partnership Working category, the example submitted was St Oswald's Way, the new long distance walk that explores some of the finest landscapes and the fascinating history of Northumberland. Alnwick District took the lead on this project, working in partnership with other local authorities and organisations.
