The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) had to stop work at ten sites during random spot checks on refurbishments sites in Aberdeen last week.

The HSE said examples of bad and even dangerous working practices had been found by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors in Aberdeen last week.

Eleven sites received an unannounced visit from the HSE and as a result, work was stopped on all but one site because of poor standards relating to working at height and maintaining sites in good order.

HM Principal Inspector of Health and Safety, Jim Skilling said the inspectors were appalled at the poor standards and willingness to ignore basic safety precautions.

He said: "We will not tolerate poor standards and will take appropriate enforcement action proactively as well as when an accident occurs.

"Our advice to those who work in the refurbishment sector is to plan work, use competent workers and if working at height use the right equipment and use it safely."

Spot checks will continue in Scotland this month.
